Critical Thinking and Language

by Osman Parvez

Maybe this is a little off topic, but I'm always trying to improve this blog and I'd like to share some ideas. For me, blogging is about trying to look at things in an interesting way, sharing information, and learning to write more effectively.

Today I read an interesting article from Roy Peter Clark (a repeat guest on the Oprah Winfrey show). It stems from a discussion on truth telling in America, helping citizens to be smarter about how to interpret messages encountered every day in government, in media, in the workplace, in business and advertising. Clark's article is about how to get actively involved in your community and how to think critically (which leads to better journalism/blogging).

It includes a link to George Orwell's essay on Politics and the English Language. I hadn't read the Orwell essay before and was very impressed. I'm studying it as a guide for better writing.

The Poynter Institute website is filled resources for becoming a better writer. If you're a blogger, I recommend bookmarking it.
