Washington Village Update

After skidding off the tracks, the Washington Elementary School cohousing project appears to be making progress again. When I started covering this story 18 months ago, the developer and the neighbors were miles apart. I'm glad to see that they're both "cautiously optimistic" now.
After two hours of back-and-forth between neighbors and representatives of Wonderland Hill on Wednesday, both sides pronounced themselves cautiously optimistic.
The number of housing units has been reduced from 17 percent, to 33. Office space has been slashed from 6,800 square feet to 3,000 square feet, and the six single-family homes scheduled to be built on the east side of the site have been clustered together more tightly.
A multi-family building along Broadway is now 11 feet shorter at the ground level and is now another 10 feet farther away from its neighbors to the north. A building planned just north of the existing school building has also been moved farther south to avoid crowding its northern neighbors. Condensing the site and making it denser has freed up more open space — about one-third of an acre on the eastern end of the property — but it’s not clear if that space would be open to the public.
