Ecopass Under Attack - Meeting Tonight

The following message came across my neighborhood email list last night. The program as it exists now is clearly being challenged. I thought it important enough to share with blog readers. If you care about keeping the neighborhood EcoPass program, I recommend you attend the meeting tonight.
Hello Neighbors,

I wanted to let all of you know that there are some interesting changes brewing for the EcoPass Program and how you can be involved in shaping these changes.

Proposed changes are:
*A 14 percent increase (consistent with the increase in all RTD fares) and an additional 5 percent increase (based on the numbers they have collected for increased ridership in 2008) in the price of all Eco Passes and Neighborhood Passes;
*A $5.00 surcharge for rides to DIA for those who are using an Eco Pass or Neighborhood Pass;
*A new proposal that significantly increases the price small businesses pay for the Eco Pass in 2009, with an even bigger jump in 2010 and,
*Another new recommendation for the Neighborhood Pass program, beyond the originally proposed moratorium (no new neighborhoods will be allowed to join the EcoPass Program after this year), to eliminate the Neighborhood Pass Progam entirely in 2010.

The board is meeting at 5:30 on Tuesday, September 30th at RTD Headquarters at 1600 Blake Street, just West of the Market Street Station.
Please plan to come and bring your neighbors. A good turnout at the meeting may impact the decision.

  1. How is having one guy sitting on the back of a filth belching bus clogging traffic in the best interest of the environment?

  2. You obviously haven't ridden RTD in a long time, have you? My observation is that most buses are at 50-80% capacity during the day. At peak hours, it looks like it's close to 100% for the regional routes.

    The RTD board voted in favor of dropping a structural change to the EcoPass program that would have likely priced some small businesses out of the transit program. The plan originally proposed a price hike of more than 300 percent over two years for some businesses, but the RTD board dropped that provision after more than an hour of hearing opposition from a room full of Boulder residents and workers.


    In a loss for many people in attendance, though, the board did approve changes to the neighborhood EcoPass program. The biggest change was a moratorium on any new neighborhoods joining the program. The majority of neighborhoods already in the program are in Boulder County.

    What are the MPG per passenger?

    I suspect there is a huge difference between peak and average

    I need not ride RTD to make this observation since I am eternally choking on their exhaust while stuck behind an empty bus on my 60 mpg motorcycle.

    RTD buses are the only vehicles on the road who actually emit pollution you can feel burning your face (You can actually hear the particulate filth rattling off a face-shield).
